Memo To:
All members of St. John's From:
Pastor John Re:
Update and clarification of costs for options 1-4 Date:
5/8/09 Greetings, As we prepare for the
congregational meeting on May 17 please be aware of updated
information regarding option 4 and as well an attempt to
clarify some question regarding all the cost for the
different options. The update is that after an
evaluation of the parsonage at the Seneca Street property it
is being recommended that we do not consider that part of
the total purchase option. Therefore, the updated cost
for option 4 is as follows: price of church building and
eight acres - $600,000 (first quote for parsonage and land
and church - $750,000.). On the cover letter of
April 17 to the packet of information on options 1-4 I
listed costs at the bottom of the page. Due to some
last minute changes as these numbers were being processed
the following comparison is the latest attempt to provide
accurate information.
Option 1
Option 1a Option 2
Option 3
Option 4 Estimate cost
$1,900,000. $1,615,000 *** $3,880,550.

$1,521,200. $920,000.**
Mortgage Payments $13,500.
$11,700.
****
$5,800.
*Option 3 could be
accomplished in two phases, one phase to accomplish boiler
improvements, new portico and office and a small addition to
move the altar for more space in the parish hall.
Phase one would cost approximately $700,000. Phase
two; the actual construction of the new worship space in the
courtyard would cost approximately $800,000. **Cost
offset by sale of Clinton Street property, the proceeds of
the sale unknown. ***$280,000. Added to basic estimate of
$1,335,000. Because replacement of trusses is possible.
****Phase one monthly mortgage payment $4,400. Phase
two $5,000. |

We still need volunteers for Tour de Revs!!!
Tour de Revs is a nationwide mission to encourage
contributions to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal.
St. John's has a goal of $6,000 and with your help and
matching funds from the Erie County Thrivent Chapter we hope
to surpass that amount. "Three guys, one bike, 100
days, 13,000 miles and 65 cities" explains very cleverly and
concisely the trip planned by three West Virginia pastors,
riding a special bamboo bicycle built for three, touring the
country to bring attention to and raise money for the plight
of the world's hungry. How can you help?
On Sunday, May 3rd our
Sunday School children started this mission campaign with a
walk to and around Burchfield Nature and Art Center.
This represented day #1 of the Tour de Rev and the children
were able to raise over $300 for the Tour de Revs appeal.
Go to the Tour de Revs Photo Gallery to
see pictures of their walk. Sign up to be a
volunteer after worship services or respond
to this e-mail and someone will contact you regarding a
specific date between May 13th and August 20th.

Updates
During the "Town Hall Meetings" for
options 1-4, there was much discussion regarding the
space available for our educational facilities at the
Seneca Street Property. (Option 4) Rick Lipka has
prepared a drawing of a proposed room layout
showing how our current facilities could be accommodated
at Seneca Street. The proposal involves some remodeling
of their existing educational wing. The anticipated
expense is included in the cost for the proposal.
The option 4 committee has determined
that including the house in the purchase of the Seneca
Street property is not in our best interests. Therefore
the anticipated cost has been lowered accordingly.
The updated cost is now as follows:
Cost
$600,000
Organ Move
50,000
Wall dividing Sanctuary into two parts
20,000
Additional Expense
110,000 ($100,000 Modifications, $10,000
move)
Demolition of Church
140,000
Total $920,000
Pictures of the Congregational Council have been
added to the Photo Galleries.
The Tour de Revs link in the menus now
takes you to our own Tour de Revs page
rather than the national site. This
page includes an interactive map of the tour and
the schedule for our volunteers.

Update From The
Worship and Music Committee
Pastor Klatt, Carolly
Huth and the Ushers met between services on 4/26 to come
up with a better idea for Communion. Yes, we have
listened and we heard your comments, suggestions, etc.
Here is what we came up
with:
There will be two lines
of communicants approaching the altar from the center
aisle.
The Assisting Ministers
will space themselves farther from Pastor to give the
communicants time to pray, a moment of silence,
etc. before receiving the wine.
Two Acolytes will stand
in the first row of each center section at the side
aisles holding trays to receive the used Communion cups.
One chair has been removed on each side for this
purpose. If there is only one Acolyte, an Usher
will cover that position.
Two Ushers will stand
in the first row of each center section at the center
aisle holding trays of clean Communion cups. One
chair has been removed on each side for this purpose.
Two Ushers will direct
the congregation forward for communion. The
Acolytes, Crucifer and Choirs (if in attendance) will
commune first proceeding down the outside aisle and
processing up the center aisle in two rows and return
via the side aisles. The Ushers will then direct
the center sections forward, starting with the first
rows and working backward. They will exit their
rows into the center aisle and return via the side
aisles.
The next sections to
commune will be the "balcony" sections, those in the
back corners of the church. They will process up
the center aisle and return via the side aisles.
The last sections to commune will be the side
sections starting with the last row and working forward.
They will exit their rows toward the outside aisles,
proceed up the center aisle and return via the side
aisles. The Ushers will direct the congregation in
a timely manner so as to avoid long lines waiting to
commune. This should alleviate bottle necks and
congestion.
We have already
implemented this new format and it is working smoothly.
As always we welcome your comments and suggestions.

Scripture of the Day
Trust in the Lord
with all your heart, and do not rely on your own
insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he
will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3.5-6
Therefore, my
beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in
the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord
your labor is not in vain.
